Create A New School
Building from Scratch
Creating
Districts across the state have been facing challenges from increasing enrollment, persistent underperformance, and changing curricular needs. Creating new schools means bringing new programmatic options, new teachers, or new approaches to communities through brand new schools. This allows teachers, students, and families to have a blank canvas to paint a picture of the learning environment that best suits their unique needs. The Center for School Action encourages districts to be responsive to the needs of their communities and do what is best for their students and families.
Creating with a Texas Partnership
District contracts with a new or existing Texas partner to launch and operate a new school. New schools are defined as new schools for state reporting and must receive a new county district campus number (CDCN). Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Creating a new school is about more than just building a new curricular approach with new teachers for its students; it’s about building on lessons learned and designing new opportunities for the communities that deserve them the most.
Key Elements
To Create a new school you need the following elements:
- Identify those communities that have the greatest need for a high-performing school.
- Identify a partner to launch and operate a new school as an innovative partnership.
- Or, engage in a design process to plan and launch a new school.
Spotlight: Creating a New School
At Highlands High School in San Antonio ISD, one-third of its students were “over-aged” and behind one or two academic years and in need additional academic support. In March of 2018, San Antonio ISD voted unanimously to partner with Texans Can Academies to provide a pathway to a high school diploma for over-age students at Highlands High School and the surrounding community.
While the partnership is currently in its first year, under the support available for Texas Partnership schools, the district is receiving an additional $1,400 to support each student in the new school – ensuring that those students who need the most support and resources, are getting them.
